Spring 2012 Select Basketball

If you are looking for a competitive basketball experience, consider the Koa Select/Rising Star Teams. All the information is below and in the FAQs. But if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call (301.229.PLAY!)

Overview:
Koa’s Select teams are intended for athletes in grades 5th-8th looking to play basketball at a higher level in a “select” environment.  The program is designed to be a developmental/feeder program for middle school or JV high school basketball teams.  The teams will have one practice per week, and play in the Force One League.  Most games will be played in Silver Spring or the NW DC area, and will take place on the weekends. These teams are professionally coached during practices and games

Spring Select Basketball FAQs:

Q: How can I join a Koa Spring Select Team?
A:
All interested players (new and returning) must register to attend the March 10th tryouts -- no walk-ons will be allowed. TRYOUT INFORMATION

Q: What league do the Spring Select Teams play in?
A:
Our Spring Select teams will play in the Force One League.

Q: What is the commitment required for a Koa Select Team?
A:
Select players are required to attend one 1.5 hour practice each week.  Koa expects that Select basketball will be the primary athletic commitment for the season. We totally understand about family trips and school work, but we are not lenient about missing basketball for other sports.

Q: How long is the commitment?
A:
Koa Select spring players have a 1 season commitment which begins the first weekend of April and runs through the second weekend of June.  Koa has open tryouts after each season.

Q: Where are the practices and games held?
A: Practices will typically be at gyms in the Bethesda, Rockville, and NW DC area. Games will mostly take place in Silver Spring or NW DC.

Q: How is playing time determined on the Koa Select Teams?
A: On the Koa Select Teams, we will have starters and bench players.  Each player will play in every game, but the amount of playing time is merit based.  Of course, during practices there will be equal time spent on all players, irrespective of whether that player is a “starter.”

Q: What is the cost of the Koa Select/Rising Star Teams?
A: The cost of the Spring 2012 team is $350 + $70 for a uniform if your son did not play on a winter Koa Rising Star team. This includes: league fees, ref fees, game uniforms, practice uniforms, coaching fees, gym and rental fees, insurance, equipment, and administrative charges.  Koa wearables are available for purchase and are sold at our actual cost, without any markup (fleece, jackets, long sleeve shirts).

Q: How many coaches will be at the Select Team practices?
A:
Most often there will be one coach per practice. Occasionally, there will be two coaches.  We would like each athlete to get to know the entire Koa Hoops Staff.

Q: How many coaches will be at the Select games?
A
: Most often there will be one coach per Select game. Occasionally, there will be two coaches.

Q: What are the qualifications of the Koa coaches?
A:
Virtually all of Koa’s coaches played collegiate or professional basketball. Full bios of some of our coaches can be found online on our staff page.

Q: What happens if I do not make a Select Team?
A:
We will offer a 7 week Spring Open Hoops Program.  Players are grouped into teams by age/ability and we place everyone appropriately.  The program includes a 1.5 hour week night practice clinic and Saturday Spartan League games. The cost for the program is $300 ($250 plus $50 for a reversible jersey). Registration for the Open Hoops Program is online.

Q: How many coaches will be at the Open Hoops Program practice clinics?
A:
The ratio will be 6 players to 1 coach so we can give plenty of individual attention to each player.

Q: How much parent involvement is required? Do parents coach?
A:
We believe the players are better off with coaches doing the coaching, and parents doing the parenting.  Read our Koa White Paper if you haven't already -- it's imperative that every Dad and Mom in our program read and understand our philosophy.  We may need a Parent Manager (PM) for each team, which would require 10-15 minutes per week, tops.
