FAQ About the Surf Camp:

Who are the surf instructors?
We hire experienced surf professional who are experienced in teaching kids.  In addition, Koa staffers will be with the campers at all times.  The surf beaches at Tower Road are adjacent to guarded beaches.

Does my camper need any surfing experience?
No!  All skill levels from novice on up are welcome.  Your camper needs to be able to swim with his head above water and must be able to swim to shore.   Weaker swimmers will be kept in shallow water, and our instructors will be with campers at all times.  Our beginners learn to surf in very shallow water and the instructors are in the water at all times.

What do you do for safety?
We take safety very seriously in our camps.  The instruction takes place adjacent to guarded beaches and all of our instructors are trained in water safety.  Our Koa Sports staff are CPR and First Aid trained.

Does my camper need a surfboard?
Koa Sports will provide all equipment.  This includes surfboards and wetsuits.  Your camper will receive a Koa “rash guard” (included in tution), they also provide great sun protection!

What are the accommodations?
Koa Sports rents a spacious house 1 block from the beach.  Each camper will have his/her own bed in a shared room.

What kind of food will you have?
Our very own staff, supervised by Chef Mindela, will prepare three meals a day, plus snacks.  We serve hearty breakfasts, sandwiches for lunch, healthy snacks and cookouts for dinner. Of course there will be  plenty of water and bug juice throughout the day.

What does my camper need to bring?
Bathing suits, casual clothing, 2 shower towels, 2 beach towels, water bottle, toiletries and plenty of sunscreen

What happens if the weather’s bad?
Here’s the thing about surfers, they’ll surf in all kinds of weather.  So long as there’s no thunder or lightening, we’ll be out there surfing!

Are there really waves in Dewey Beach?
Absolutely!  The Tower Road beach located just outside Dewey Beach is an awesome place to surf.  Income tides are generally best because the water is shallow, and the tides create great, peeling waves.  The wave is typically a “right” with some “lefts” along the way.  Outgoing tides are not as good to surf, but when they approach low tide, the conditions clean up very nicely.  In the summer months, Dewey Beach typically sees knee high to waist high waves, although we sometimes get head high swells.

What if there aren’t any waves?
It does happen – sometimes there just isn’t a swell.  This is rare, but is possible.  So what’s our contingency plan?  Simple:  we get on another board!  Whether it’s skimboarding, or heading to the Rehoboth Bay for some standup paddleboarding, the fun doesn’t stop.  We even have some options to rent boats and go “skurfing” – which is basically surfing on the wave behind the boat.  The bottom line is, we get wet, and get it done.  And soon enough the waves will be back!
