Time: Saturdays --5:00pm - 6:30pm

Program: Looking to make the move from slow to fast pitch softball?  Our fast pitch developmental team aims to move players to the next stage of the game! Using proven skills & drills, our coaches (most of whom are collegiate athletes) will work to develop 1) hitting performance; 2) fielding technique, and if interested; 3) pitching skills!! We'll also cover stealing, sliding, bunting and how to hit that curve ball!!

Koa's goal is to give each athlete maximum instruction to get her ready (and excited!) about moving into the high school leagues. The most exciting goal of the developmental team is to have the girls ready to play other beginner fast pitch teams in travel tournaments throughout the area! If you are currently in our Mudcat League and looking for a higher level of play, no problem! You can be a part of our fast pitch developmental team, too!

FAST PITCH DEVELOPMENT TEAM FAQs
Q.  What if my daughter has never played fastpitch before?
A.  No problem! Many of the girls entering the developmental league will have never played fastpitch prior to the first session!  Our developmental league will focus on the basics so it will be great for girls with little or no softball experience, but are looking for a more competitive playing experience.

Q.  How is fastpitch different than slow pitch?
A.  Great question! In fastpitch, the pitcher throws faster (no arc), girls can steal without restrictions, and it is definitely more fast-paced! Don’t worry though, the fundamentals are the same--if your daughter played slowpitch, the transition should be easy!

Q.  What if my daughter is interested in becoming a pitcher?
A.  Our league will focus on a variety of fundamentals but we plan on having 1 clinic in particular dedicated to the basics of pitching.  We will have an experienced pitching coach come to the clinic to help guide the girls through the fundamentals! We will go over the importance of the wrist snap, closing the hips, and following through to get that pitch just right.

Q.  How do I register?
A.  Registration is easy! Simply Click Here!!

Q.   Can my daughter participate if she is already in the Koa Mudcat League?
A.  Absolutely! The developmental clinic will be held Saturday evenings at Ayrlawn Park from 5:00-6:30pm.  There should not be any conflicts with the scheduled games for the Fall 2010 season!

Q.  Will there be games and practices and when will they be held?
A.  There will not be any games for this developmental clinic but we plan to scrimmage!  The goal of this program is to teach the girls the fundamentals of fastpitch—oh, and to have fun!! Clinics will be held once a week on Saturdays from 5:00-6:30pm at Ayrlawn Park.  The majority of our coaches are former collegiate athletes! This is the ideal clinic for girls who are looking to play in high school and increase their level of play!  Depending on the level of interest, we would like to develop a fastpitch league for future seasons.

Q.   Who will coach?
A.  The majority of our coaches are former collegiate athletes!  Who knows more about having fun and learning the basics better than former (and current!) softball players!

Q.  Will fastpitch require any additional equipment?
A.  The basics are the same ,but we recommend that your daughter wear plastic cleats (no metal) for practices rather than sneakers.  Cleats give better traction when running and fielding.  We also suggest that the girls invest in sliding shorts to wear under her shorts or pants. Unlike the slowpitch league, the girls will be sliding a lot more than before.  Lastly, though it is not required, a mouth guard is a great investment!

Q.  Will there be winter workouts?
A.  Depending on the level of interest, we will work to put together an indoor clinic during those cold winter months! Most of the best players work through the ‘off season’ in order to get to the next level!!

Fall 2010 Girls Softball League - (Grades 3-8th) FAQ's
REGISTRATION CLOSED

Location:       TBD
Dates:           Will start the first Sunday after Labor Day (9/12/10)
Times:          TBD
Cost:            $160, which includes league fees, jersey, umpire fees, equipment costs, and coaching fees.

Program:      This girls softball league introduces athletes to the fundamentals of softball.  As with other Koa programs, we handle all of the player development while you – the parents – get to sit on the sidelines and cheer!  Our professional coaches, most of whom played softball at the collegiate level, work with the players both in their pre-game warmup, and during the game.  You may enter this program as an individual, or bring a pre-formed team.  Teams will have 13 players.  Games will be mostly on Sundays, with an occasional mid-week or Saturday game.  We will work hard so that there are few (if any) conflicts with soccer.  If you have any questions, please contact Mindi Susskind (mindi@koasports.org)

KOA GIRLS SOFTBALL LEAGUE FAQs:

We’ve covered the FAQ’s about our Koa Girls Softball League below, but if you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Mindi Susskind (mindi@koasports.org).

Q – Who can play in the Koa Girls Softball League?
A – Any girl who will be in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th grades (fast pitch) in the Fall of 2010 is welcome to join the Koa League.  There will be 3rd-4th, 5th-6th, and 7th-8th grade (fast pitch) divisions.  We will try to accommodate any requests to have a player or two on a team who may not be the same age as the team majority.  Experienced teams are welcome to “play up” a division.

Q -- How do I get on a Koa Girls Softball team?
A – It’s easy to play on a Koa team.  When you sign up for the Girls Softball League, you can opt to have Koa place you on an age appropriate team or you can come to Koa with a pre-formed team.  Click here to register or if you have a pre-formed team, email Parent Relations Director Mindi Susskind (mindi@koasports.org) to move your entire team over to the Koa League.  Keep in mind that we will do everything possible to accommodate all requests to play with friends.

Q – Who will coach the teams?
A – At Koa Sports, we believe kids can get the best training from experienced coaches and instructors (check out our Coach Bio page (click here for bios).  Most of our coaches are collegiate athletes and they will run the pre-game practice and coach the games.  A parent assistant coach will assist our coaches during the games and the pre-game practice. The parents get to enjoy the games and cheer on their athletes from the sidelines.

Q – How does the Koa League differ from other leagues?
A – Thankfully, girls who want to play softball have some options.  Our league differs from others in one important way:  our league provides coaching whereas other leagues leave it to the parents.  Not that there’s anything wrong with parents, of course. (Those of us writing these FAQs are all parents!)  But we believe that the players get better instruction and have way more fun, when the professionals are doing the coaching!

Q – When will the games be held?
A – We will play mostly on Sunday afternoons and maybe one midweek or Saturday game depending on field assignments.  The pre-game warmup and practice will be held immediately before the game.  The league starts on Sunday the week of September 12 and runs through October 17 with October 24th reserved as a rain date. All games will be held in the Potomac/Bethesda/Rockville area.

Q -- Will there be a mid-week practice?
A -- Teams are encouraged to practice as a team during the week on fields provided by Koa. Should a team decide to hold a mid-week practice, the parent assistant coach will be in charge. Koa will provided suggested practice plans for such practices. Additionally, Koa will hold "development" practices twice weekly. At these optional practices, all Fall Softball Mudcat League players can attend (with an RSVP to Coach Jess (jess@KoaSports.org) between the Friday and Sunday before each clinic) to practice on a particular focus area. For example, if a player is having difficulty hitting, she is welcome to attend the mid-week development practice focusing on hitting. The schedule of development practice focuses will be on the website during the season.

Q – What will you do at the pre-game practice?
A – Our collegiate level coaches will have a plan each week, focusing on player development.

Q – Can I move my entire team into Koa?
A – Yes, absolutely.  Teams can have up to 13 players.

Q –  Will the games have umpires?
A – Yes, the games will have umpires!

Q – How long is the season?
A – The season will have approximately 7 games, with a possible double-header depending on rainouts.

Q – Where will the games be held?
A – Games will be held in the Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville area. In the Spring season we had games at Avenel, Beverly Farms, and Cabin John (local).

Q – How many games do you expect to have in each division?
A – Based on the interest we have had, we expect each division to have between 4 and 6 teams per division.

Q – When is the cutoff date for registration?
A – July 1 is the cutoff date.

Q – How much does it cost to play in the Koa Fall Softball League?
A – The fee per player is $160.00 and includes a Koa Jersey and professional coaching.

Q – Are you having a fast pitch developmental program for the 5th-6th grade teams?
A – Yep, we sure are!  This program will take place during the week, and the girls will learn “fast pitch” softball techniques.  More to come about this in the fall!

Q – What if I already play another fall sport?
A – Koa believes kids should be playing several sports, especially at this age.  We will work with you to find a placement that will fit your schedule.  Our Sunday schedule will eliminate many fall soccer conflicts.  However, please contact us if you are only able to play on Saturdays, as we can place you on another team that plays on Saturdays only.
