June 2019 Newsletter!

Koa Families,

Schooooool’s out for summer, schoooool’s out forever!  To celebrate summer break and Koa’s (adult) Board on hiatus until the fall, we are looking for athletes 9-14 years old to help shape Koa.  If your young athlete is passionate about sports and Koa, in general, we want to hear their feedback!  The forum will be a casual, fun environment where athletes can voice their opinions and about what’s important to their sports experience.

We will have a Koa Kid’s Board Meeting next month at Koa HQ, there will be refreshments for the kids (only 1 parent will be allowed to take notes). Koa mgmt is hoping to hear from the athletes on several categories including, practice plans, gear/swag recommendation, team building ideas, and more!

If you are interested in more details, please drop me a line- tony@koasports.org.

To celebrate Father’s Day, I came across an article that highlights multiple MLB Dad’s and when they realized their son had what it takes to go all the way. MLB Fathers tell all!

I’ll never forget, I was in the hallway running a parent meeting (while the kids were on the court practicing) for our newly formed 4th-grade select winter hoops team.  My opening line to address the parents was simple and true, “your son is NOT going to play in the NBA” a mother interrupted me as I was completing my sentence and simply asked, “how do you know?”  This 4th-grade team are now upperclassmen in high school, and I vividly recall this meeting at Carderock Elementary School many years ago.  Hopefully, I got my point across that Koa is about development and life lessons, and not scholarships and pro contracts.

I never answered her question directly, but the answer is simple.  Mom is barely 5 feet and her husband is under 6 feet, the player could not proficiently ball handle or make a layup with both hands.  ESPN ranks players as young as 4th grade now, nobody on this team would have ever been nationally ranked.  There were a ton of nice boys, who worked hard, and half of them eventually made their HS team!  Ironically, their Koa Coach was a second-round draft pick of the Sacramento Kings and played in the NBA and overseas for a decade.

What’s New?

Basketball

Earlier this month, the spring basketball season came to an end. The 4th Grade Green Wave took home another championship beating Team Hardwork 24-17 in the Force One League! Congratulations to Coach Jay-D and the boys on a great season! For the summer, it is all about player development and skill work as we will be hosting training sessions Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 4:30 and 5:30 pm as well as Saturday mornings at 10:00 and 11:00 am. The first session is a FREE 30-minute workout, schedule yours by emailing BasketballTraining@koasports.org.

We will also be hosting two weeks of basketball camp with a new swimming option for those who want to! The camp will begin on July 15th and July 22nd where campers will work on their basketball skills throughout the week, including dribbling, shooting form, free throws, defensive stance and more! Our professional coaches will work with campers through various drills, competitions, and scrimmages. Each one-week session will include a lot of fun–and some hard work, too! This is the basketball summer camp option for all skill levels who agree with our favorite hoops saying: Ball is life! To learn more and to register, click here!

The weather is heating up, and so is our baseball program.  A bunch of highlights this past month:

Pictured above, 12U Koa Player Tommy B. taking a picture in the regional for MLB’s Jr HR Derby! Tommy won the local qualifying event that Koa hosted last month. While Tommy isn’t advancing to the next round, he hit several home runs and had an amazing experience!

Koa’s 12U Travel Won it’s first-ever tournament in Essex, MD over Father’s Day Weekend!

Koa’s 10 & 11U Travel team competed in their first even tournament championship game, congrats!

Koa’s College (22U Team) is well over .500 and in 2nd place, ready to make a deep playoff run next month.

Koa’s 16U Velocity Program has begun, our athletes are working hard and looking to improve both throwing & hitting velocity.  More details on this progress next month.

Field Hockey

The Koa FH Club and Development Teams wrapped up their Spring seasons in June, and put everything they learned during the season on display! Our u16 Green DT Team won the Spring League Championship by winning 5 games and going undefeated on Championship Day! Our u14 Green DT Team made it to the Championship Game, but ultimately fell just short and came in 2nd Place! Our Club Teams wrapped up their season with a big Player vs Parent game at their final practice! The parents got to take on their daughters in an intense game, and finally got to experience that FH isn’t as easy as it looks from the sidelines! All of our club teams then participated in their final tournament of the Spring season at the Howard County Summer Smash Tournament.

Coach of The Month

Coach Haley

This season was Haley’s first season coaching at Koa. She has playing experience at the Division I Level at American University and at the Club Level with WC Eagles. Haley coached 2 Development Teams this season and her U16 Team won the Spring League Championship!

Player of The Month

Nate Rosner

Nate has seen the benefits of his extreme hard work come to light this past month. Coming off the spring in which he held a 1.5era with 54ks in 35inn, Nate helped lead 14u East to a 2nd place finish at the Fruitland tournament. He started 2 games on the mound allowing 2 runs total in 11inns, including a complete game victory over the #1 seed in the semifinals. Nate followed that up with another complete game victory to beat the then #1 seed Hanover Sports at the Virginia Commonwealth Classic. Nate is a consistently hard worker who spends many nights working on his craft at the Koa Facility. In the past month, Nate has raised his batting average over 150 points from the spring and has taken on new challenges in the field without hesitation.
